| Class I | Easy - fast moving water with riffles, small waves and few obstructions |
| Class II | Novice - straight forward rapids with wide, clear channels |
| Class III | Intermediate - rapids with moderate, irregular waves, strong eddies, powerful currents, rocks and other obstacles |
| Class IV | Advanced - intense, powerful but predictable rapids, large unavoidable waves and large rocks to maneuver around |
| Class V | Expert - extremely long, obstructed or very violent rapids; dangerous swims |
